Best Practice: A method that has been proven through trial and error to be superior to other methods. The most efficient way to get something done.
Through the generous input of former students of the Learning Extension (see more below), we’ve identified 10 Best Practices that can help you maximize your e-learning experience. Use these to improve the quality of your on-line learning experience.
According to the students we surveyed, the biggest key to online success is:
Best Practice #1: Make others aware that you are studying online.
Many participants said they struggled to find time to do their online review while juggling busy family, work and school schedules. They liked the flexibility that e-learning afforded them because of anywhere, anytime accessibility. However, many suggested that future e-learners clearly communicate to co-workers and family members that they were studying to minimize interruptions.
Use these "e-learning in progress!" signs to help.
Simply print one or two of these signs for outside your office, cube or other areas where you do your e-learning. Whenever you “go to class,” put a sign up. These notices will serve as a gentle reminder that you’re currently unavailable, and will help train co-workers, friends and family to be considerate of your study time.
Here are nine other best practices that other students identified that can add value to your
e-learning experience:
Best Practice #2: Buyer beware - analyze the features and interactivity of online courses before you buy.
Best Practice #3: Take the time to acclimate to your new e-learning environment.
Best Practice #4: Ask for help if you get stuck!
Best Practice #5: Develop and maintain an online learning schedule and routine.
Best Practice #6: Take advantage of the chief benefit of online learning - anywhere, anytime access.
Best Practice #7: Keep an offline portfolio.
Best Practice #8: Interact with others and use netiquette when doing so.
Best Practice #9: The more you put in the more you'll get out.
Best Practice #10: Utilize the resources provided.
More About e-Learning Best Practices
In April of 2003, the NCSBN Learning Extension conducted an extensive survey of students who took our RN NCLEX preparation course and gained valuable feedback on course improvements. Afterwards, we asked these same students if they would be willing to provide greater detail on their online study and habits. 143 out of the 1,031 who took the original survey agreed to participate. With these students’ help, we were able to determine common experiences that we developed into best practices for studying online.
